Networks Engineer - Automation

Purpose

The Automation Engineer will be responsible for developing tools for monitoring network devices, visualizing network, support troubleshooting and provisioning. Due to the large size of the environment there will be a number of challenges presented to the selected candidate. The ideal candidate should also possess sound knowledge in networking technologies.

The incumbent will have to coordinate with various network and systems teams across Pearson, in order to provide accurate information and required visibility to different levels within the organization.

Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • Having CCNA would be an advantage
  • A minimum of Bachelor's Degree or higher although relevant experience will also be taken into consideration

Technical Competency

  • Scripting and basic website development (Linux, bash, Python, Ruby )
  • Consistent provisioning of devices
  • Monitoring of network devices
  • Generation of tickets and alerts when incidents occur or when there are indicators of impending incidents
  • Developing tools for network visualization
  • Developing tools for rapid troubleshooting
  • Probes for measuring network quality and availability and application performance
  • Understand and modeling usage patterns to feed network design, vendor contractor negotiations, capacity planning and internal cross charging
  • Campus and data center network automation (Software Defined Networks)
  • Good understanding of TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, DNS, DHCP, SNA, EIGRP, Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocols.
  • Proven successful delivery of high-quality, cost-effective infrastructure services in a complex, high-availability environment.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet / Wireless provisioned solutions within an Enterprise Network.
  • Exposure to Legacy Voice technology and/or IPT Networks an advantage.
  • Cisco orientated IOS / CatOS experience working with Routers and Switch platforms.

Non-Technical Competency

  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Proven ability to plan and execute complex workload in a pressurized, dynamic environment on time and to budget.
  • Excellent organizational skills and be a self-starter.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in critical situations

  • Should be able to carry out expected tasks without supervision
  • Ability to work under pressure both within a team environment and as an individual

Accountabilities/Responsibility

  • Monitor network to ensure network availability to pre-agreed Service Levels and perform necessary maintenance to support network availability
  • To manage performance tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance the performance of network resources
  • Assists in maintaining the operating system and security software utilized on the network, including the addition of new users to the network and establishment of rights and privileges
  • Perform Move, Additions, Deletion and Changes as necessary in accordance with departmental change policy
  • Take appropriate steps to resolve Service Issues as and when they occur under the guidance of the Senior Network Support Engineer
  • Ensure that the Physical Network Environment meets at least the minimum operations criteria
  • Participation in the On-Call Global support rotation
  • Be conversant with current industry best practice
