Technical Specialist - Storage

Technical Specialist-storage is primarily responsible for managing all aspects of monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting the production/staging storage arrays and events and requests for problem escalations from Service Desk. He will also be responsible for general storage/backup and reporting responsibilities as assigned.

Technical expert-storage determines the severity of issues (triage), prioritizes issues, performs diagnosis of system and software components to identify root cause, and takes or recommends corrective action for resolution.  He will also work with other operations team’s members, systems and database administrators, software engineers/QA, technical product managers and vendors to clearly state problems, troubleshoot, diagnose and/or resolve complex technical issues.

Accountabilities/Responsibility

  • Provide support services for Storage systems & SAN switches.
  • Document maintenance and support procedures for routine tasks.
  • Host, storage, and switch configuration, performance analysis and corrections, disk space management and responding to hardware failures.
  • Manage, maintain and enhance the SAN/NAS disk and Fibre Channel switched network infrastructure
  • Manage SAN capacity and performance using appropriate reporting & monitoring tools.
  • Action requests for new storage, working with other teams.
  • Provide input and support for infrastructure and application development projects that require storage infrastructure.
  • Ongoing evaluation and analysis of the storage infrastructure to provide optimum performance.
  • Capacity planning and metrics reporting for storage infrastructures and data retention services.
  • Support a 24 x 7 operations/ Participate in team on-call rotations.
  • Management and troubleshooting of multiple highly available storage systems including SAN & NAS.
  • Performs storage administration functions including storage allocation/de-allocation, utilization reporting, performance monitoring/tuning, trending and capacity planning.
  • Evaluates, recommends, and configures new hardware and storage management software products.
  • Maintenance of storage hardware and associated software at top levels of performance by monitoring version upgrades and maintenance releases to ensure that environment is optimally configured.
  • Responsible to work closely with storage backup administrator for all tape or disk based backups to ensure data is appropriately backed up and recoverable.
  • Consults with other internal IT teams (database administrators, systems administrators, application engineers, etc.) on storage solutions.
  • Works within change management process to ensure that outages are scheduled to minimize impact on clients, but still maintain all hardware and software at optimal levels.
  • Maintains relationships and coordinate with multiple storage vendors.
  • Tape/Disk based backup & restoration responsibilities.
  • Provide guidance in the setup, design and administration of storage solutions.
  • Coordinate on-call support of storages & have flexibility of hours on occasion for releases, upgrades and maintenance windows.

 

Technical Competency

  • Work experience as a Storage & Backup Administrator (5+years)
  • Very good knowledge on storage concepts such as RAID levels, Disk groups/Aggregates, LUNs, Volumes…etc.
  • Work experience on Data Center infrastructure maintenance such as fiber cabling, power maintenance..etc.
  • Very good knowledge of SAN, NAS, DAS.
  • Very good knowledge on sizing, performance analysis, and high availability.
  • Very good knowledge in Storage & Fabric Management Tools such as EMC Unisphere, Brocade Network advisor and CLI tools.
  • Very good knowledge in Storage Auto-Tiering technologies.
  • Very good knowledge in Storage Disaster recovery, Data replication and High Availability technologies.
  • Work experience with All flash arrays (EMC and NetApp)
  • Work experience with NetApp cDOT / 7-mode Storage Arrays and E-series systems.
  • Work experience with EMC VNX/ VNX2 and VMAX Storage Arrays.
  • Work experience with Brocade and Cisco fabric switches.
  • Work experience with Cisco UCS environments.
  • Work experience with Data protection & Data archival products such as EMC Datadomain, EMC Centera,
  • Work experience with Business continuity  and Disaster recovery solutions like EMC RecoverPoint, RecoverPoint/SE and NetApp Snapmirror,
  • Work experience with EMC Networker and Symantec NetBackup.
  • Evaluates and applies software/firmware upgrades and support packs as required to solve production problems and/or ensure compliance and system integrity.

 

Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, IS, or Electrical Engineering
  • Professional certification on Storage technologies - NCSA, EMCIE, Brocade, VCP, CiscoUCS.
  • Professional certification on Data protection technologies  - Symantec & EMC
  • ITIL Foundation Certification

  • Should have very good verbal & written communication skills.
