Technical Specialist - Linux Platform

The Systems Engineer is primarily responsible for managing all aspects of configuring, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting the production servers and handling requests and problem escalations from Service Desk and other departments.  The engineer determines the severity of issues (triage), prioritizes issues, performs diagnosis of system and software components to identify root cause, and takes action or recommends corrective action for resolution.
The engineer will work with other networks, database, software & quality engineering teams and technical product managers and vendors to clearly state problems, troubleshoot, diagnose and/or resolve complex technical issues.

Accountabilities / Responsibilities

  • Create, maintain, publish, and present a roadmap for the LINUX/UNIX platform.
  • Participate in long range planning and ensure those plans are consistent with business objectives for resiliency, disaster tolerance, and regulatory compliance
  • Set direction and develop strategies based on industry best practices and technology trends for the platform.
  • Participate in research, innovation, evaluations, and proof-of-concept activities.
  • Initiate projects to advance the initiatives identified in the roadmap.
  • Participate in problem management activities for problems with result in availability issues for the platform.
  • Evolve, monitor, maintain or even replace existing systems for continuous growth.
  • Take part in advanced end to end troubleshooting.
  • Be excited to learn more and solve problems in scaling large systems.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • 10+ years of experience with designing, building and administrating complex Linux platforms and operation of medium to large-scale enterprise and cloud infrastructures, databases, and application systems with high-availability requirements.
  • Automation experience using configuration management systems to both deploy and maintain services such as Chef, Puppet & Ansible.
  • Strong proficiency with mainstream Linux distributions, such as Redhat 5/6, CentOS 5/6, Ubuntu 12/14 & UNIX Distributions such as Solaris/AIX/HPUX.
  • Using s/w lifecycle management to orchestrate patching of operating systems on a large scale such as RHN
  • 4+ Years of administration experience of Apache HTTP web server, Tomcat, Oracle/BEA Web Logic, NginX, Memcached, varnish & rabbitmq.
  • 2+ Years of experience on working with multiple cloud providers such as AWS, vCloud Director, OpenStack & Azure.
  • Extensive experience using Bash to automate repeatable work
  • Experience of working directly with another programming language in addition to Bash such as Python, Ruby, Go & Clojure.
  • Experience of using version control systems such as Git/SVN/CVS is a plus
  • Sound experience on Linux Operating System hardening mechanisms.
  • Sound analytical and troubleshooting skills, under pressure.

Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT or any other equivalent qualification.
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
  • Red Hat Certified Security Specialist (RHCSS)
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect would be an added qualification
