Senior Systems Engineer - Linux Platform

The Systems Engineer is primarily responsible for managing all aspects of configuring, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting the production servers and handling requests and problem escalations from Service Desk and other departments.  The engineer determines the severity of issues (triage), prioritizes issues, performs diagnosis of system and software components to identify root cause, and takes action or recommends corrective action for resolution.The engineer will work with other networks, database, software & quality engineering teams and technical product managers and vendors to clearly state problems, troubleshoot, diagnose and/or resolve complex technical issues.

Accountabilities / Responsibilities

  • Support Unix Operations team in a 24x7 global team setup, comprised of employees and consultants, that provide administration, advanced support and operational management of Unix/Linux systems across internal private and AWS platforms
  • Install and configure Linux OS on physical and virtual systems
  • Help in identifying, troubleshooting and resolve technical issues related to the Unix/Linux systems
  • Interfaces with hardware vendors to maintain and schedule repair of systems in a timely manner
  • Identify and improve Unix operation processes & procedures by automation
  • Ensure system availability and performance by proactively monitoring the usage and enabling effective alerts/probes
  • Ensure change management processes, incident and problem management processes are followed
  • Automate  recurring manual tasks in order to make the whole team more efficient. 
  • Implement effective problem management processes to identify and proactively remediate incident trends
  • Apply patches and upgrades on Unix/Linux systems as needed
  • Participate in the internal Operational projects in migrating systems from physical data center to virtual data center
  • Perform capacity analysis of the Unix/Linux computing resources and notify the team for timely action
  • Provide senior level technical support for Unix related project activities

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • 6+ Years of Linux/Unix Administration Experience.
  • Strong proficiency with mainstream Linux distributions, such as Redhat 5/6, CentOS 5/6, Ubuntu 12 & 14.
  • Extensive experience using Bash to automate repeatable work
  • Experience of working directly with another programming language in addition to Bash such as Python, Ruby, Go & Clojure
  • Hands on experience in managing DNS (BIND), LDAP, NTP and SMTP (Exim, postfix or sendmail)
  • Using software lifecycle management to orchestrate patching of operating systems on a large scale such as RHN
  • Automation experience using configuration management systems to both deploy and maintain services such as  Chef, Puppet & Ansible
  • Experience in a Hosted Services environment or working directly with hosting providers would be added advantage.
  • 2+ Years of administration experience of Apache HTTP web server, Tomcat, Oracle/BEA Web Logic, NginX, Memcached, varnish & rabbitmq.
  • 2+ Years of experience on working with multiple cloud providers such as AWS, vCloud Director, OpenStack & Azure.
  • Experience on Linux server hardening mechanisms.
  • Experience on health/performance monitoring with using tools like App Dynamics, New Relic etc....

  • Should have very good verbal & written communication skills.
  • Should be able to work independently with minimum supervision from onsite locations.
  • Should be willing to work on extended and irregular hours when required.
  • Strong self-starter, motivated to help TEAM in their deliverables

Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT or any other equivalent qualification.
  • RHCE (Redhat Certified Systems Engineer)
