Senior Storage Engineer

The Storage Engineer is primarily responsible for managing all aspects of monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting the production/staging storage boxes and events and requests for problem escalations from Service Desk. Secondarily, the incumbent will be responsible for escalation training of other groups. The incumbent will also be responsible for general storage/backup and reporting responsibilities as assigned. The engineer determines the severity of issues (triage), prioritizes issues, performs diagnosis of system and software components to identify root cause, and takes or recommends corrective action for resolution.
The engineer will work with other Operations team members, systems and database administrators, software engineers/QA, technical product managers and vendors to clearly state problems, troubleshoot, diagnose and/or resolve complex technical issues.

Accountabilities/Responsibility

  • Provide support services for Storage Systems & SAN switches.
  • Clearly document maintenance and support procedures for routine tasks
  • Host, storage, and switch configuration, performance analysis and corrections, disk space management and responding to hardware failures.
  • Manage, maintain and enhance the SAN/NAS disk and Fibre Channel switched network infrastructure
  • Manage SAN capacity and performance using appropriate reporting & monitoring tools
  • Action requests for new storage, working with other teams
  • Provide input and support for infrastructure and application development projects that require storage infrastructure
  • Ongoing evaluation and analysis of the storage infrastructure to provide optimum performance
  • Capacity planning and metrics reporting for storage infrastructures and data retention services
  • Support a 24 x 7 operation, and carry a cell phone / pager
  • Management and troubleshooting of multiple highly available 24x7 storage systems including SAN, NAS and DAS
  • Performs storage administration functions including storage allocation/de-allocation, utilization reporting, performance monitoring/tuning, trending and capacity planning
  • Evaluates, recommends, and configures new hardware and storage management software products
  • Maintenance of storage hardware and associated software at top levels of performance by monitoring version upgrades and maintenance releases to ensure that environment is optimally configured
  • Responsible to work closely with storage backup administrator for all tape or disk based backups to ensure data is appropriately backed up and recoverable
  • Creates operational procedures and documentation
  • Consults with other internal IT teams (database administrators, systems administrators, application engineers, etc) on storage solutions
  • Works within change management process to ensure that outages are scheduled to minimize impact on clients, but still maintain all hardware and software at optimal levels
  • Collection of data for annual and interim capacity plans forecasting resource requirements, service levels
  • Maintains relationships and coordinate with multiple storage vendors
  • Tape/Disk based backup & restoration responsibilities
  • Experience in managing and supporting EMC, Netapp & Clarion storage environments.
  • Provide guidance in the setup, design and administration of storage solutions..
  • Coordinate on-call support of storages & have flexibility of hours on occasion for releases, upgrades and maintenance windows.
  • Lead team in supporting internet-scale customer facing web applications meeting or exceeding availability of 99.9% uptime.
  • Identify Opportunities and motivate team to create and deploy automation frameworks and methodologies
  • Negotiate and maintain relationships with hardware and software vendors.
  • Coach and encourage organizational shift to devops model.

Technical Competency

  • Experience as a SAN/NAS & Backup Administrator (5yrs)
  • Manage the backup and restoration of systems using Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)
  • Install, maintain, update and administer TSM.
  • Daily corporate backups using TSM software and monitoring of schedules for failed and missed backups.
  • Fine-tune and troubleshoot TSM environment for optimal performance and resolve complex issues in a timely manner.
  • Diagnose TSM platform issues (server and client side) and provide Support in complex, business-critical environment including physical and virtual infrastructure.
  • Manage the backup and restoration of systems using Symantec Netbackup/EMC Networker.
  • Knowledge of storage administration and the concepts of file systems, disk partitions, mounts, quotas, mirroring and sizing.
  • Expert knowledge of NAS, DAS, SAN.
  • Expert with storage sizing, performance, and high availability
  • Working experience with NetApp cDOT and 7-mode Storage Arrays.
  • Working experience with EMC VNX and VMAX Storage Arrays.
  • Working experience with Brocade fabric switches.
  • Evaluates and applies software/firmware upgrades and support packs as required to solve production problems and/or ensure compliance and system integrity.
  • Consults with senior engineers while working with infrastructure and applications teams to troubleshoot complex problems, providing root cause analysis and remediation to mitigate future risk.

Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, IS, or Electrical Engineering
  • EMC – EMCISA, EMCSA/EMCIE
  • IBM Certified Deployment Professional - Tivoli Storage Manager
  • NetApp Certifications- NCSA, NCDA, NCIE
  • Brocade Certified Fabric Administrator
  • ITIL Foundation Certification
