Automation Engineer

Job Purpose:  


This role will be responsible for taking standardised processes from the Platform Operations team such as provisioning, patching, backup etc… and automating these processes to reduce the resource time spent on this repeatable work.  You will form part of a team that will drive best practice in the Enterprise Automation arena and you will be expected to collaborate with, and support agile service delivery teams and operational teams whose primary responsibilities will be to support services in production and pre-production environments.

 

Essential skills, qualifications and experience:

 

Intermediate skills:

 

  • Administering, building and configuring Linux and Windows

  • Demonstrable intermediate understanding of monitoring, security and architectural components such as storage and networking

  • Extensive experience of scripting and automation to support and troubleshoot hosted applications including BMC BladeLogic, Chef, Puppet and shell scripting

  • Show accountability and end to end ownership of support and build issues  

  • Understanding of performance, sustainability, durability, resilience and continuity of any deliverables that you create

  • Experience of working in an Agile environment with a foundation level understanding of Agile principles and their application

  • Show a detailed working knowledge of incident, change and release management and their application in a technology support environment

  • Appreciation of vendor and open source tools and the ability to analyse the comparable benefits to deliver technical solutions

  • English as a business language

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the criticality of operations as an enabler for growth


 

Desirable skills, qualifications and experience:

 

  • Intermediate functional specialism in database administration and/or configuration, virtualisation, storage or monitoring dependant on specific role requirements

  • Knowledge of Continuous Delivery of infrastructure code practices and tools

  • Good understanding of DevOps in an operational environment

  • Full tech stack appreciation

  • Delivery focused with the ability to interact directly with internal customers as a service provider

  • Experience of using Service Now or similar incident and change tracking tools

  • Experience with working with global patching strategies and tools

  • Technical/team leadership experience

  • Demonstrable resource scheduling skills

  • Experience of high volume queues and ticket allocation
