Application Engineer

The Application Engineer works closely with system administrators, release management, software development, project management, QA and business users to ensure that Pearson applications meet business objectives and services quality/performance targets.

The position involves setting up, supporting, configuring, and maintaining middleware software for development, test, and production servers in geographically-disparate, multi-tiered environments by applying Unix, Windows, Apache, Tomcat, and WebLogic expertise. It will also provide monitoring and maintenance scripting for all application tiers as well as writing thorough documentation. This position will assist with the development and implementation of support standards and practices.

In addition, this role will also be a DevOps practitioner, who will participate on an agile service delivery teams whose primary responsibilities will be to support/enhance those services in production and pre-production environments hosted in a hybrid cloud ecosystem.  The service delivery team is responsible for deploying code, building automation, quality engineering, generating documentation, monitoring and 24/7 support of their services.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in DevOps team activities (iteration planning, scrum, deployment, automation, etc.) while working with product managers, business partners and stakeholders to understand and help build short term and long term team goals and objectives.
  • Work with Team members to build automation into new and existing service offerings.
  • Help team iterate and build on NFRs to fully operationalize their services.
  • Maintain the existing platforms (SLA’s, OLA’s), monitor usage data, investigating the failures, and deploy new code/fixes.
  • Self-starter who is able to identify needs, help with solutions, and thrive in a small team atmosphere supporting large enterprise goals.
  • Participate in a 24/7/365 On-Call Rotation amongst the DevOps team members to support the team’s services.
  • Provide after-hours support for system outages and planned maintenance events.
  • Mentoring of junior team members and peers.
  • Maintain vendor relationships.
  • Working with Application Engineering/DevOps management to set, drive, and present strategic vision for the department and the organization

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • 3+ years supporting internet based applications.
  • 3+ years industry experience with current  coding/scripting skills (Javascript, Python, Java)
  • Subject matter expertise in the administration of Apache HTTP web server, Tomcat, Oracle/BEA WebLogic, and Linux
  • Experience with implementation and design of automation and automation frameworks which leverages tools such as Puppet, Python, Jenkins, Chef
  • Senior level experience integrating with multiple cloud providers such as AWS, vCloud Director and OpenStack.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux (Ubuntu/CentOS), Java and Apache and/or Windows Server 2008, IIS, PowerShell.
  • Experience with open source monitoring tools such as Nagios, Zabbix, Graphite and Zenoss.
  • Experience with MSSQL, Oracle, MySQL and NoSQL technologies such as Cassandra, MongoDB and Reddis.
  • Experience integrating with centralized logging solutions such as Splunk, GrayLog2, Kibana, and or syslog-ng
  • Experience with source controls systems such as Git, Maven or Perforce
  • Ability to thrive in a fast moving, high-stress environment.
  • Experience working in an Agile/ Kanban development environment.
  • Understanding of networking, load balancing and storage technologies in a hybrid cloud environment.
  • ITIL Foundations Certification preferred.
  • Ability to interact with prompt and professionalism to the teams across different time zones.
  • Experience and knowledge on OOP, Analysis & Design, Unit Testing and development of highly scalable web applications is recommended.
  • Experience or knowledge on building, packaging & deployment tools, web and application servers and database technologies.
  • Experience with monitoring tools and a strong understanding of capacity planning is recommended.
  • Understanding of storage, operating systems, networking, virtualization, networking, and internet security.\
  • Excellent customer service attitude, communication skills (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Graduate in IT, IS or Computer Science with minimum four (4) years of experience in software engineering, software Implementation or systems/infrastructure Engineering.
